Gandanta: the knots between cycles

Gandanta is the “knot” at the junction of a water sign and a fire sign, where a sign and a nakshatra end at the same point. There are three: Cancer–Leo (Ashlesha–Magha), Scorpio–Sagittarius (Jyeshtha–Mula) and Pisces–Aries (Revati–Ashwini). A planet or lagna here is considered in a transitional, sensitive state.

Where the gandantas are

The zodiac falls into three cycles of four signs and nine nakshatras, and in three places the cycles coincide: the end of Cancer and start of Leo (Ashlesha → Magha), the end of Scorpio and start of Sagittarius (Jyeshtha → Mula), the end of Pisces and start of Aries (Revati → Ashwini). The strict definition is the last pada of the water sign and the first pada of the fire sign, 3°20′ on each side.

What gandanta means in a chart

Gandanta is the passage from water to fire, from one cycle to the next.
