Annular solar eclipse: 6 February 2027

On 6 February 2027 the Moon passes in front of the Sun as an annular, ring-shaped eclipse, greatest at 15:59 UTC, with both in sidereal Capricorn (JyotiSoft calculation). It is visible in South America and in western and southern Africa; India, Europe, North America and Australia do not see it, so the tradition keeps no sutak there. It falls on the new Moon called Mauni Amavasya.

According to the Dharmasindhu (Kashinatha Upadhyaya, 1790), sutak (vedha) means avoiding food from four yamas (about 12 hours) before a solar eclipse and three yamas (about 9 hours) before a lunar eclipse. Children and older people may eat until about one yama before the eclipse. It applies only where the eclipse is visible and lasts until it ends. Traditions differ in the details; follow the custom of your family or temple.

By Moon sign

The house from your Moon sign (rashi) in which the event falls.

Moon signHouse from the MoonWhat it touches
Aries (Mesha)10Traditionally favourable for work and public responsibilities; focus on steady effort without expecting recognition as a given.
Taurus (Vrishabha)9Beliefs and elders: a good day for charity and for remembering ancestors.
Gemini (Mithuna)8A sensitive placement: look after health, travel and shared money around the eclipse.
Cancer (Karka)7Some traditions keep partnership discussions and agreements low-key around an eclipse. If you follow that custom, take time and keep conversations calm.
Leo (Simha)6Traditionally favourable: this house is associated with handling routines and competition. Treat it as a tendency, not a promise.
Virgo (Kanya)5Children and study need attention. Good for prayer and mantra, not for speculation.
Libra (Tula)4Home and peace of mind may feel unsettled. Keep the day calm, postpone a move.
Scorpio (Vrishchika)3Traditionally a favourable placement: effort and courage are supported. Finish what you started.
Sagittarius (Dhanu)2Money and family talk need care around the day. Avoid big purchases and harsh words.
Capricorn (Makara)1In your Moon sign: the tradition treats this as the most sensitive placement. Rest, keep the eclipse customs, avoid big starts near the day.
Aquarius (Kumbha)12Expenses and sleep: rest, give, meditate. Avoid long journeys on the day.
Pisces (Mina)11Traditionally favourable for gains and social support; use the day for prayer or giving without expecting a particular result.

What happens in the sky

A solar eclipse happens at a new Moon close to the lunar nodes, Rahu and Ketu. On 6 February 2027 the Moon is a little too far from Earth to cover the Sun completely, so along a narrow track a bright ring stays visible: an annular eclipse. Elsewhere in the eclipse zone people see a partial eclipse. Both lights stand in sidereal Capricorn, three minutes of arc into Dhanishta, right at its border with Shravana.

Where it is seen

The eclipse is above the horizon in South America (Buenos Aires sees about 88% of the Sun's diameter covered, São Paulo about 85%) and in western and southern Africa (Accra and Lagos about 94–95%, Cape Town only a sliver). None of the ten cities in the table below sees it. Never look at the Sun directly or through dark glass: use certified eclipse glasses or a pinhole projection.

Sutak: only where the eclipse is seen

The Dharmasindhu (Kashinatha Upadhyaya, 1790) counts sutak (vedha) from four yamas, about 12 hours, before a solar eclipse begins locally, and only where it is visible. India, Europe and North America do not see this eclipse, so no local sutak period applies there. Where it is visible, the table's last column gives the start. Customs differ between regions and families; follow your own. Mauni Amavasya falls on the same day; its customs are observed separately from the eclipse.

Your house from the Moon

Panchang tradition reads an eclipse by the house from the Moon sign in which it falls: the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th are counted favourable, the 1st, 4th, 8th and 12th sensitive. For Moon in Capricorn the eclipse falls on the Moon sign itself. The table below gives a line for each sign; for the whole year see eclipses 2027.
