Sunapha, Anapha and Durudhara yogas

These three lunar yogas look at the signs either side of the Moon. A planet in the 2nd from the Moon forms Sunapha, in the 12th forms Anapha, and on both sides Durudhara. They describe how supported and self-reliant the mind is.

How the JyotiSoft engine checks it

Sunapha: Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus or Saturn in the 2nd sign from the Moon. Anapha: one of them in the 12th sign from the Moon. When both hold, the classics call it Durudhara; the engine reports it as Durudhara too, not as Sunapha and Anapha. The Sun, Rahu and Ketu do not count (Brihat Jataka, Saravali, Phaladeepika).

What they give

The Moon is the mind, and planets beside it give it company and resources. Sunapha, with a planet ahead of the Moon, is linked to self-earned wealth and initiative. Anapha, with a planet behind it, is linked to dignity, health and a capacity to let go. Durudhara, with both, is described as abundance and generosity. Without either the Moon stands alone, and that is the start of Kemadruma.

The planet decides the flavour

Which planet stands beside the Moon matters more than the yoga's name. Jupiter next to the Moon gives wisdom and protection; Venus, comfort and charm; Mercury, cleverness; Mars, courage and drive; Saturn, endurance and seriousness. A debilitated or afflicted planet in that place gives the same structure with more effort.

How common they are

Sunapha and Anapha each form in about one chart in five in our sample, Durudhara in about one in nine. They are best read as part of the Moon's overall support, together with the Moon's phase, its sign and the aspects it receives, rather than as rare distinctions.

Does the Sun count for Sunapha or Anapha?

No. The classical definitions count only Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn; the Sun and the nodes are excluded.

Is Sunapha yoga good for money?

It is traditionally linked to self-earned wealth, especially when a benefic forms it. The 2nd and 11th houses from the lagna still decide the finances.
