Nakshatras
Magha nakshatra
Magha is the tenth nakshatra: Leo from 0° to 13°20′. It is ruled by Ketu and its deities are the Pitris, the ancestors. “The great one”: a nakshatra of lineage, the throne and inheritance.

The nature of Magha
Magha means “great, bountiful”. Its symbol is a royal throne and its deities are the ancestors whose line continues in us. It is the nakshatra of status, tradition, family name and responsibility for what has been handed down. Ketu as ruler ties it to the past and gives an inner dignity that needs no proof.
Magha’s first pada falls within the Leo-side Cancer–Leo gandanta.
The Moon in Magha
People with the Moon in Magha are usually proud and noble, with a strong sense of family and history. They want respect and know how to lead; ceremony and order matter to them. The shadow is arrogance and sensitivity to criticism. They flourish when they serve something larger than themselves — a family, a cause, a tradition.
The dasha sequence begins with Ketu (7 years).
Emotionally, Magha needs respect and a sense of belonging to something larger than itself — a family, a lineage, a tradition. Disrespect wounds it deeply. What helps: honouring its roots, a role with dignity, and remembering that true authority serves. These are traditional tendencies, not a verdict; the full chart matters.
The four padas
| Pada | Span (sidereal) | Navamsha sign | Name syllable |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Leo 0°00′ – 3°20′ | Aries (Mesha) | Ma |
| 2 | Leo 3°20′ – 6°40′ | Taurus (Vrishabha) | Mi |
| 3 | Leo 6°40′ – 10°00′ | Gemini (Mithuna) | Mu |
| 4 | Leo 10°00′ – 13°20′ | Cancer (Karka) | Me |
Pada 1 (Aries navamsha, syllable Ma) is the most commanding: leadership, courage, sometimes pride; it lies within the Leo-side Cancer–Leo gandanta. Pada 2 (Taurus, Mi) is practical and wealth-minded, attached to family property. Pada 3 (Gemini, Mu) is intellectual and communicative. Pada 4 (Cancer, Me) is the most devoted to family, ancestors and tradition.
All four padas lie in Leo, the Sun's sign; Ketu rules the nakshatra, so authority comes with a feeling for the past.
Magha in the classical texts
The Taittiriya Brahmana gives Magha to the Pitris, the fathers and ancestors. Later authors read its gift (shakti) as the power to leave the body, the link between the living and the departed. Brihat Samhita (chapter 98) counts Magha among the fierce (ugra) nakshatras, yet tradition uses it for ancestral rites and formal ceremonies. In Vimshottari Magha belongs to Ketu, so a Magha Moon begins life in a seven-year Ketu period.
Magha's chief star is Regulus, the “little king” at the heart of the Lion, which matches its symbol of the throne. In the pitru paksha fortnight the day of Magha is considered especially fit for shraddha.
Magha in relationships
In relationships Magha is loyal, proud and family-minded; it wants respect and gives protection. It may choose a partner with an eye to family and status. Its risk is expecting deference; partners who honour its roots and keep their own dignity suit it.
For matching, Magha is rakshasa gana, rat yoni and Antya nadi. Its yoni twin is Purva Phalguni; the cat (Punarvasu, Ashlesha) is the rat's classical enemy. Two Antya nadi charts lose the nadi points. The compatibility calculator gives any pair.
Work and strengths
Strengths: authority, a sense of duty, respect for tradition and the ability to take responsibility. Good fields: government and administration, management, law, history and archives, family business, politics, ceremonial and religious work.
Ketu gives inner dignity; the Sun, the sign lord, gives leadership. Magha does well in roles with a title and a legacy; it should take care that status serves the work, not the other way round.
What Magha is good for
Magha is a “fierce” (ugra) nakshatra, but it is readily used for ancestral rites, formal ceremonies and taking office. Weddings and journeys are usually avoided.
The ascendant and planets in Magha
An ascendant in Magha gives a dignified bearing and a natural authority. The Sun in Magha is in Leo, its own sign: leadership rooted in family and tradition. Ketu in Magha, the nakshatra it rules, gives inherited gifts and a detachment from status even while holding it. Jupiter in Magha honours lineage and learning. Saturn in Magha makes a serious custodian of a family or an institution.
During Ketu's dasha Magha's themes of ancestry, legacy and letting go of pride come forward.
Remedies and practice
Magha's practice is honouring the line one comes from. Tradition suggests offering water and sesame to the ancestors (tarpana), especially on new moons and in pitru paksha, a name mantra such as “Om Pitribhyo namah”, and caring for elders. For the ruling graha, Ketu, the classical mantra is on our mantras page. Feeding people in the name of ancestors and keeping the family's good customs are Magha's own remedies. Pride is its shadow; service is its cure. A gemstone is a classical upaya too: the tradition chooses it from the whole chart (functional benefics, the running dasha), with mantra and charity as the foundation; practices are optional and do not guarantee outcomes. For context, see remedies (upayas).
