The nature of Mula
Mula means “root”. Its symbol is a bunch of roots, and its stars are the tail of Scorpio pointing towards the centre of the galaxy. Nirriti is associated with dissolution and with removing what has run its course. It is the nakshatra of the researcher who digs down to the essence, and of the person who clears away the old to build the new. Ketu gives detachment and an interest in the spiritual.
Mula’s first pada falls within the Sagittarius-side Scorpio–Sagittarius gandanta.
The Moon in Mula
People with the Moon in Mula are direct, independent and look for the essence of things. Philosophy, science, medicine and the roots of problems draw them. Life often takes them through sharp changes, and they know how to start from zero. The task is not to tear down what can still be healed.
The dasha sequence begins with Ketu (7 years).
Emotionally, Mula needs to get to the truth of things; shallow answers frustrate it. It can feel uprooted during big changes. What helps: deep study or spiritual practice, a stable place to return to, and letting go of what has truly ended. These are traditional tendencies, not a verdict; the full chart matters.
The four padas
| Pada | Span (sidereal) | Navamsha sign | Name syllable |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Sagittarius 0°00′ – 3°20′ | Aries (Mesha) | Ye |
| 2 | Sagittarius 3°20′ – 6°40′ | Taurus (Vrishabha) | Yo |
| 3 | Sagittarius 6°40′ – 10°00′ | Gemini (Mithuna) | Bha |
| 4 | Sagittarius 10°00′ – 13°20′ | Cancer (Karka) | Bhi |
Pada 1 (Aries navamsha, syllable Ye) lies within the Sagittarius-side Scorpio–Sagittarius gandanta: bold, direct, pioneering. Pada 2 (Taurus, Yo) is practical and determined, good with resources. Pada 3 (Gemini, Bha) is intellectual: research, writing, debate. Pada 4 (Cancer, Bhi) is the most feeling: devotion, healing, family.
All four padas lie in Sagittarius, Jupiter's sign; Ketu rules the nakshatra, so the search for truth here goes to the roots.
Mula in the classical texts
Jyotisha texts give Mula to Nirriti, the goddess of dissolution who takes away what has to go. Later authors read its gift (shakti) as the power to root out. Brihat Samhita (chapter 98) counts Mula among the sharp (tikshna) nakshatras, with Ardra, Ashlesha and Jyeshtha. In Vimshottari it belongs to Ketu, so a Mula Moon begins life in a seven-year Ketu period.
Mula's stars form the sting of the Scorpion, close to the direction of the galactic centre. Its first pada lies within the Sagittarius-side Scorpio–Sagittarius gandanta, and birth texts prescribe a calming rite for a child born at its very beginning.
Mula in relationships
In relationships Mula is frank, intense and searching; it wants honesty and depth and may test a relationship to see if it is real. Partners who are sincere and give it room for its inner search suit it best.
For matching, Mula is rakshasa gana, dog yoni and Adi nadi. Its yoni twin is Ardra; the deer (Anuradha, Jyeshtha) is the dog's classical enemy. Two Adi nadi charts lose the nadi points. The compatibility calculator gives any pair.
Work and strengths
Strengths: research, investigation, courage to start over and a feel for root causes. Good fields: research and science, medicine and herbal medicine, investigation, philosophy and spiritual teaching, agriculture and botany, demolition and renovation.
Ketu gives depth and detachment; Jupiter, the sign lord, gives meaning. Mula does best where getting to the bottom of things is the job; it should avoid tearing down what still works.
What Mula is good for
Mula is a “sharp” (tikshna) nakshatra: for research, cutting away what is not needed, getting to the root of a problem and herbal treatment. Weddings and moves are usually avoided.
The ascendant and planets in Mula
An ascendant in Mula gives a searching, straightforward nature. Jupiter in Mula is in Sagittarius, its own sign: philosophy, research and teaching at their root. Ketu here, in its own nakshatra, gives detachment and spiritual depth. The Moon in Mula questions everything and needs firm ground. Mars in Mula makes a bold investigator or surgeon. The Sun here seeks truth over comfort.
During Ketu's dasha Mula themes of uprooting, research and inner change come forward.
Remedies and practice
Mula's practice is clearing with care. Tradition suggests honouring the root of things: the name mantra “Om Nirrtyai namah” or, as many families do, worship of Ganesha and the Goddess, and caring for plants, herbs and the soil. For the ruling graha, Ketu, the classical mantra is on our mantras page. Giving roots, grains or medicines to those in need fits this nakshatra. For a birth at the start of Mula, families often do a shanti puja with their priest. A gemstone is a classical upaya too: the tradition chooses it from the whole chart (functional benefics, the running dasha), with mantra and charity as the foundation; practices are optional and do not guarantee outcomes. For context, see remedies (upayas).
