Nakshatras
Ashwini nakshatra
Ashwini is the first of the 27 nakshatras: Aries from 0° to 13°20′. It is ruled by Ketu and presided over by the Ashvins, the divine healers. A nakshatra of speed, new beginnings and healing.

The nature of Ashwini
Ashwini's symbol is a horse's head, and its deities, the twin Ashvins, race across the sky in a chariot, healing gods and humans alike. Hence its themes: quick action, help on the spot, medicine, transport, anything that starts from zero. Tradition names its power (shakti) the ability “to reach quickly”.
Ashwini’s first pada falls within the Aries-side Pisces–Aries gandanta, the junction between water and fire signs. It carries the energy of a first step and little patience for long preparation.
The Moon in Ashwini
People with the Moon in Ashwini are usually lively, quick and decisive, and are easily fired up by something new. Waiting is hard for them: they would rather act and correct on the way. Many have a gift for helping — from medicine and sport to simply being the first to arrive when someone needs a hand. The shadow side is impatience and a habit of dropping things once the novelty fades.
Ketu as ruler gives intuition and “ready-made” skills a person cannot remember learning. For someone born with the Moon in Ashwini, the Vimshottari sequence begins with Ketu's dasha (7 years, part of it already spent before birth).
Emotionally, Ashwini needs movement and a sense of progress: a day without a goal makes it restless. It recovers fastest through physical activity and helping someone concretely. What helps: short, achievable targets, a morning routine, and a friend who can say “wait” without dampening the spark. These are traditional tendencies, not a verdict; the full chart matters.
The four padas
| Pada | Span (sidereal) | Navamsha sign | Name syllable |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Aries 0°00′ – 3°20′ | Aries (Mesha) | Chu |
| 2 | Aries 3°20′ – 6°40′ | Taurus (Vrishabha) | Che |
| 3 | Aries 6°40′ – 10°00′ | Gemini (Mithuna) | Cho |
| 4 | Aries 10°00′ – 13°20′ | Cancer (Karka) | La |
Pada 1 (Aries navamsha, syllable Chu) is vargottama: sign and navamsha are both Aries, so the nakshatra's speed and courage are at their purest — athletes, first responders, founders. Pada 2 (Taurus, Che) slows the horse to a trot: the same initiative aimed at money, food and lasting comfort. Pada 3 (Gemini, Cho) puts the energy into words and skills — quick learners, traders, people who explain things well. Pada 4 (Cancer, La) is the most caring: the physician side of the Ashvins, with a talent for nursing, healing and protecting a home.
The syllable of the Moon's pada is the traditional first sound of a child's name (nama nakshatra). The table above gives each pada's span and syllable.
Ashwini in the classical texts
The Taittiriya Brahmana, in its list of the nakshatras and their gods, gives Ashwini to the Ashvins, the twin horsemen who restore sight, youth and health in the Rigveda's hymns. Later authors read from those hymns the gift (shakti) of Ashwini as reaching the goal quickly. Varahamihira's Brihat Samhita (chapter 98) counts Ashwini among the light or swift (laghu, kshipra) nakshatras, together with Pushya and Hasta: the time to begin medicine, learning, trade, travel and anything that should move fast. Parashara's Vimshottari scheme gives it to Ketu, so every life that begins in Ashwini opens with a Ketu period.
In the common 27-nakshatra Jyotisha order, Ashwini comes first. Older Vedic lists can use a different starting point: the Taittiriya list begins with Krittika. Ashwini’s first pada lies within the Aries-side Pisces–Aries gandanta, treated carefully in birth and muhurta traditions.
Ashwini in relationships
In love, Ashwini falls quickly and shows it openly. It needs a partner who does not hold it back and is ready for spontaneity; long rounds of “we need to talk” wear it out, and jealousy or control feels like a cage. It does best with people who have their own projects and respect personal space.
In Ashtakuta matching Ashwini is deva gana, horse yoni and Adi nadi. The horse is the natural enemy of the buffalo (Hasta, Swati) in the yoni table, and two Adi nadi charts lose the eight nadi points, so Shatabhisha, its own horse twin, scores low. Same-gana deva partners (Mrigashira, Punarvasu, Pushya and others) are classically easy. A score is only a start: read it with both full charts, or try the compatibility calculator.
Work and strengths
Strengths: fast reactions, courage, the ability to start things and to help in an emergency. Good fields: medicine and emergency care, physiotherapy and sport, transport and logistics, start-ups, sales, veterinary work and work with machines. Ketu as ruler adds a talent for diagnosis and for skills that seem inborn.
Ashwini may suit work that rewards quick initiative, while routine tasks can call for deliberate structure. Learning to finish what was started — or to hand the routine to a steady partner — turns many quick starts into real results. A simple saving habit may help balance spending and saving.
What Ashwini is good for
Ashwini is one of the “swift” (kshipra) nakshatras. In muhurat it is chosen to begin treatment, take medicine, travel, buy a vehicle, start study or trade. For long commitments like laying a foundation, the fixed nakshatras are better.
The ascendant and planets in Ashwini
In traditional readings, an ascendant in Ashwini is associated with a quick manner and a preference for movement. The Sun is exalted in Aries; its deepest exaltation, 10° Aries, lies in Ashwini. Traditional readings associate this with initiative and visibility. Mars in Ashwini acts fast and fearlessly but needs a goal worth the speed. Saturn is debilitated in Aries; readings often frame this as a prompt to practise patience. The full chart shapes the interpretation.
When Ketu's dasha runs for someone with planets in Ashwini, themes of healing, sudden starts and leaving things behind become stronger.
Remedies and practice
Tradition answers a hard Ashwini placement not with fear but with practice. The simplest is to honour the Ashvins: a short name mantra such as “Om Ashvinibhyam namah”, help given to someone ill or in a hurry, and care for animals, especially horses. For the ruling graha, Ketu, the mantras page gives its classical mantra; many people repeat it on Tuesdays or on the days when the Moon passes through Ashwini (see today's panchang). Steady routines calm Ashwini's impatience better than any object. A gemstone is a classical upaya too: the tradition chooses it from the whole chart (functional benefics, the running dasha), with mantra and charity as the foundation; practices are optional and do not guarantee outcomes. For context, see our note on remedies (upayas).
