Nakshatras
Ashlesha nakshatra
Ashlesha is the ninth nakshatra: Cancer from 16°40′ to 30°. It is ruled by Mercury and its deities are the Nagas. “The embracer”: a nakshatra of serpent wisdom, insight and the ability to hold on.

The nature of Ashlesha
Ashlesha means “entwining”. The serpent is a symbol of kundalini, of poison and of medicine at once. It is the nakshatra of a deep, almost hypnotic mind that sees hidden motives and knows how to influence. Mercury as ruler makes it verbal and strategic.
The end of Ashlesha is a gandanta, the junction of water (Cancer) and fire (Leo); its last pada is considered karmically intense.
The Moon in Ashlesha
People with the Moon in Ashlesha are perceptive, observant and private. They understand psychology, are persuasive and keep their distance until they are sure someone can be trusted. Strong fields: psychology, medicine, pharmacy, investigation, politics. The task is to use influence honestly and not get stuck in suspicion.
The dasha sequence begins with Mercury (17 years).
Emotionally, Ashlesha needs trust and privacy; it reads people quickly and guards itself. When hurt it can withdraw or become suspicious. What helps: a few deeply trusted people, honest talk about fears, and practices that release tension, from breathwork to creative writing. These are traditional tendencies, not a verdict; the full chart matters.
The four padas
| Pada | Span (sidereal) | Navamsha sign | Name syllable |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Cancer 16°40′ – 20°00′ | Sagittarius (Dhanu) | Di |
| 2 | Cancer 20°00′ – 23°20′ | Capricorn (Makara) | Du |
| 3 | Cancer 23°20′ – 26°40′ | Aquarius (Kumbha) | De |
| 4 | Cancer 26°40′ – 30°00′ | Pisces (Mina) | Do |
Pada 1 (Sagittarius navamsha, syllable Di) is the most open: philosophy, teaching, frank speech. Pada 2 (Capricorn, Du) is strategic and ambitious, good at business. Pada 3 (Aquarius, De) is unconventional and secretive, interested in hidden knowledge. Pada 4 (Pisces, Do) ends at the Cancer–Leo gandanta: intuitive, compassionate, karmically intense.
All four padas lie in Cancer; Mercury rules the nakshatra, so mind and feeling work closely together here.
Ashlesha in the classical texts
The Taittiriya Brahmana gives Ashlesha to the Sarpas, the serpent deities. Later authors read its gift (shakti) as the power to inflict poison; later medical symbolism also connects poison with antidote. Brihat Samhita (chapter 98) counts Ashlesha among the sharp (tikshna) nakshatras with Ardra, Jyeshtha and Mula. In Vimshottari it belongs to Mercury, so an Ashlesha Moon begins life in a seventeen-year Mercury period.
The last pada of Ashlesha, joining Cancer and Leo, is one of the three gandanta zones; muhurta and birth texts prescribe a calming rite (shanti) for a birth there, an act of care rather than a verdict.
Ashlesha in relationships
In relationships Ashlesha is intense, perceptive and protective of its own. It needs trust before it opens up and can be possessive or suspicious when hurt. Partners who are honest and give it emotional security see its deep loyalty.
For matching, Ashlesha is rakshasa gana, cat yoni and Antya nadi. Its yoni twin is Punarvasu; the rat (Magha, Purva Phalguni) is the cat's classical enemy. Rakshasa gana with deva gana is traditionally hard, and two Antya nadi charts lose the nadi points. The compatibility calculator gives any pair.
Work and strengths
Strengths: insight into people, strategy, persuasion and the ability to work with what is dangerous or hidden. Good fields: psychology and psychiatry, pharmacology and toxicology, research, diplomacy and negotiation, politics, writing, investigation.
Mercury as ruler gives a strategic mind; the Moon, the sign lord, gives intuition. Ashlesha should use its influence openly: transparency turns its power into trust.
What Ashlesha is good for
Ashlesha is a “sharp” (tikshna) nakshatra: for exposing wrongdoing, dealing with enemies, work with poisons and medicines, hard negotiations. Gentle beginnings are usually postponed on this day.
The ascendant and planets in Ashlesha
An ascendant in Ashlesha gives a penetrating gaze and a guarded manner. Mercury in Ashlesha, the nakshatra it rules, makes a strategist, writer or negotiator with a feel for what is unsaid. The Moon here, in its own sign, feels deeply and protects its people. Jupiter is exalted in Cancer; traditional readings may associate this with study, counsel and healing traditions, not a health outcome. Mars is debilitated in Cancer; its deepest debilitation, 28° Cancer, lies in Ashlesha.
During Mercury's dasha Ashlesha's themes of hidden knowledge, persuasion and medicine come forward.
Remedies and practice
Ashlesha's practice turns intensity into healing. Tradition suggests honouring the nagas on Nag Panchami and on the days of the Moon's passage through Ashlesha, with a name mantra such as “Om Sarpebhyo namah”, and protecting snakes and wild places. For the ruling graha, Mercury, the classical mantra is on our mantras page; Wednesdays are traditional for it. Honest speech and keeping confidences are Ashlesha's own remedies. For a birth in gandanta, families often do a shanti puja with their priest. A gemstone is a classical upaya too: the tradition chooses it from the whole chart (functional benefics, the running dasha), with mantra and charity as the foundation; practices are optional and do not guarantee outcomes. For context, see remedies (upayas).
