A mantra is a traditional practice of speech and attention. It is not a medical or financial treatment and promises no outcome.
The words
Brām is the seed of Mercury. Budhāya is the dative of budha, “to Budha”; the word also means “wise” or “awake” and shares its root with Buddha, though the graha is a different figure. Namaḥ is “homage”. Together: “Om, homage to Mercury.”
How to say brām and budhāya
Say a plain b with no puff of air, then the tapped r and a long vowel: braam. Keep it different from bhrām of Rahu: here there is no breath after the b.
In budhāya the dh is a dental d with a breath, the tongue against the teeth, not the English d in “dog” and not th. The long ā carries the stress: bu-dhaa-ya.
Mercury in Jyotish
Mercury signifies speech, intellect, learning, trade, writing and wit. It is the graha of youth and of adaptation, and it takes on the character of whichever graha it stands beside. Ank Jyotish gives it number 5, read as quickness, curiosity and a gift for words and numbers.
Day and practice
Its day is Wednesday, Budhavāra. Morning is a natural time for a graha of the mind, and green is the colour the tradition links to the day. A mala count is 108; if you are new to mantras a handful of clear repetitions, with attention on each syllable, serves the purpose of this one well.
