Nakshatras
Hasta nakshatra
Hasta is the 13th nakshatra: Virgo from 10° to 23°20′. It is ruled by the Moon and its deity is Savitar, the awakening sun. “The hand”: a nakshatra of skill, dexterity and a practical mind.

The nature of Hasta
Hasta's symbol is an open palm; the five stars of the asterism look like fingers. Savitar is the dawn sun that gives the strength to begin the day and places in your hand what you are reaching for. It is the nakshatra of craft, handiwork, surgery, massage, writing, trade — anything done with skill and precision.
The Moon in Hasta
People with the Moon in Hasta are skilful, quick-witted, funny and hard-working. They like making things with their hands and bringing them to perfection. They are charming and often good storytellers. Restlessness and the urge to control everything are their weak points; learning to let go helps.
The dasha sequence begins with the Moon (10 years).
Emotionally, Hasta needs to feel capable and in control of its work; uncertainty makes it nervous. Busy hands calm its mind. What helps: crafts and practical tasks, humour, and accepting that not everything can be fixed by effort. These are traditional tendencies, not a verdict; the full chart matters.
The four padas
| Pada | Span (sidereal) | Navamsha sign | Name syllable |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Virgo 10°00′ – 13°20′ | Aries (Mesha) | Pu |
| 2 | Virgo 13°20′ – 16°40′ | Taurus (Vrishabha) | Sha |
| 3 | Virgo 16°40′ – 20°00′ | Gemini (Mithuna) | Na |
| 4 | Virgo 20°00′ – 23°20′ | Cancer (Karka) | Tha |
Pada 1 (Aries navamsha, syllable Pu) is active and enterprising with the hands. Pada 2 (Taurus, Sha) is practical, fond of comfort and good materials. Pada 3 (Gemini, Na) is the most verbal and clever: writing, trade, humour. Pada 4 (Cancer, Tha) is caring: healing, cooking, home crafts.
All four padas lie in Virgo, Mercury's sign of exaltation; the Moon rules the nakshatra, so skill and feeling go together.
Hasta in the classical texts
The Taittiriya Brahmana gives Hasta to Savitar, the impelling power of the Sun to whom the Gayatri mantra is addressed. Later authors read its gift (shakti) as the power to place what we seek in our hands. Brihat Samhita (chapter 98) counts Hasta with Ashwini and Pushya among the light or swift (laghu, kshipra) nakshatras: trade, crafts, medicine, learning and travel. In Vimshottari it belongs to the Moon, so a Hasta Moon begins life in a ten-year Moon period.
Its five stars in Corvus look like a hand. Because the Gayatri is addressed to Savitar, many families favour Hasta days for beginning daily prayer or study.
Hasta in relationships
In relationships Hasta is attentive, helpful and witty; it shows love by doing things for the partner. It can be critical or anxious about details. Partners who appreciate practical care and keep life light suit it best.
For matching, Hasta is deva gana, buffalo yoni and Adi nadi. Its yoni twin is Swati; the horse (Ashwini, Shatabhisha) is the buffalo's classical enemy. Two Adi nadi charts lose the nadi points. The compatibility calculator gives any pair.
Work and strengths
Strengths: dexterity, precision, humour and the ability to learn a craft. Good fields: crafts and design, surgery and massage, writing and editing, trade, accounting, teaching skills, and any work done by hand.
The Moon gives sensitivity; Mercury, the sign lord, gives analysis. Hasta is happiest when its work is tangible; it should learn to stop polishing and deliver.
What Hasta is good for
Hasta is a “swift” (kshipra) nakshatra: for trade, learning a craft, starting treatment, travel, opening a shop and work done by hand.
The ascendant and planets in Hasta
An ascendant in Hasta gives skilful hands and a quick, practical mind. Mercury is exalted in Virgo; its deepest exaltation, 15° Virgo, lies in Hasta. Traditional readings associate this with analysis, craft and trade. The Moon here, in its own nakshatra, is clever and adaptable. Venus in Hasta is debilitated in sign and expresses love through practical care. The Sun in Hasta makes a hands-on, meticulous worker.
During the Moon's dasha Hasta themes of craft, service and dexterous work come forward.
Remedies and practice
Hasta's practice is skill offered with care. Tradition suggests reciting the Gayatri at sunrise, a name mantra to Savitar such as “Om Savitre namah”, and giving tools, books or a hand of help to those learning a trade. For the ruling graha, the Moon, the classical mantra is on our mantras page. Hasta's shadow is restlessness and over-control; finishing one piece of work at a time is its own remedy. The days of the Moon's passage through Hasta suit learning a craft and starting treatment. A gemstone is a classical upaya too: the tradition chooses it from the whole chart (functional benefics, the running dasha), with mantra and charity as the foundation; practices are optional and do not guarantee outcomes. For context, see remedies (upayas).
