The nature of Shravana
Shravana means “hearing”. Its symbol is an ear, and also the three strides with which Vishnu crossed the universe. Vedic knowledge was passed on orally, from teacher to student, so Shravana is the nakshatra of study, tradition, media and the connections between people. Vishnu preserves and sustains the order of the world.
The Moon in Shravana
People with the Moon in Shravana are attentive, courteous and curious. They learn well, know how to listen and often become teachers, consultants, journalists or translators. Reputation matters to them. The task is not to become the “eternal student” and to trust their own voice.
The dasha sequence begins with the Moon (10 years).
Emotionally, Shravana needs to be listened to as much as it listens; it remembers both kindness and criticism. What helps: learning, music or recitation, honest conversations, and time with family or a community of learners. These are traditional tendencies, not a verdict; the full chart matters.
The four padas
| Pada | Span (sidereal) | Navamsha sign | Name syllable |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Capricorn 10°00′ – 13°20′ | Aries (Mesha) | Ju |
| 2 | Capricorn 13°20′ – 16°40′ | Taurus (Vrishabha) | Je |
| 3 | Capricorn 16°40′ – 20°00′ | Gemini (Mithuna) | Jo |
| 4 | Capricorn 20°00′ – 23°20′ | Cancer (Karka) | Gha |
Pada 1 (Aries navamsha, syllable Ju) is active and enterprising. Pada 2 (Taurus, Je) is practical and wealth-minded. Pada 3 (Gemini, Jo) is the most communicative: teaching, media, languages. Pada 4 (Cancer, Gha) is caring and devoted to family.
All four padas lie in Capricorn, Saturn's sign; the Moon rules the nakshatra, so learning here is patient and well remembered.
Shravana in the classical texts
The Taittiriya Brahmana gives Shravana to Vishnu, whose three strides crossed the worlds. Later authors read its gift (shakti) as the power of connection. Brihat Samhita (chapter 98) counts Shravana among the movable (chara) nakshatras with Punarvasu, Swati, Dhanishta and Shatabhisha. In Vimshottari it belongs to the Moon, so a Shravana Moon begins life in a ten-year Moon period.
In the Ramayana the boy Shravana carried his blind parents on pilgrimage, and in Kerala the Moon in Shravana (Thiruvonam) in the month of Chingam is the day of Onam.
Shravana in relationships
In relationships Shravana is attentive, loyal and family-minded; it listens well and remembers what matters to its partner. It can be sensitive to criticism. Partners who talk openly and respect family ties suit it best.
For matching, Shravana is deva gana, monkey yoni and Antya nadi. Its yoni twin is Purva Ashadha; the sheep (Krittika, Pushya) is the monkey's classical enemy. Two Antya nadi charts lose the nadi points. The compatibility calculator gives any pair.
Work and strengths
Strengths: listening, learning, memory and connecting people. Good fields: teaching and education, media and broadcasting, counselling, languages and translation, music, travel, telecommunications.
The Moon gives empathy; Saturn, the sign lord, gives discipline. Shravana does best where knowledge is passed on; it should speak up as well as listen.
What Shravana is good for
Shravana is a “movable” (chara) nakshatra: for travel, starting study, treatment, buying a vehicle and moving house.
The ascendant and planets in Shravana
An ascendant in Shravana gives a listening, courteous manner. Mars in Shravana is in Capricorn, its exaltation sign (deepest at 28°, in Dhanishta): disciplined energy. Saturn here, in its own sign, makes a patient learner and organiser. The Moon in its own nakshatra listens well and remembers. Jupiter in Shravana is debilitated in sign and gives wisdom through practical teaching.
During the Moon's dasha Shravana themes of learning, media and family duty come forward.
Remedies and practice
Shravana's practice is listening. Tradition suggests honouring Vishnu with a name mantra such as “Om Namo Narayanaya”, hearing or reading sacred texts, and serving one's parents. For the ruling graha, the Moon, the classical mantra is on our mantras page. Studying with a teacher and passing on what one has learned are Shravana's own remedies. The days of the Moon's passage through Shravana suit study, travel and starting treatment; many keep Shravana vrata on that day each month. A gemstone is a classical upaya too: the tradition chooses it from the whole chart (functional benefics, the running dasha), with mantra and charity as the foundation; practices are optional and do not guarantee outcomes. For context, see remedies (upayas).
