Nakshatras

Rohini nakshatra

Rohini is the fourth nakshatra: Taurus from 10° to 23°20′. It is ruled by the Moon and its deity is Brahma-Prajapati. The Moon's favourite wife in myth, it is the nakshatra of growth, beauty and abundance.

The nature of Rohini

Rohini is traditionally associated with growth, beauty and nourishment. A well-known Purāṇic story says that Soma favoured Rohini among Daksha’s daughters; the story is one traditional explanation for the Moon’s close association with this nakshatra. The Moon is exalted in Taurus and occupies its own nakshatra here, a strong placement by sign in Jyotisha. Its symbol is a cart carrying a harvest, and later authors read its shakti as the power “to make things grow”.

Rohini is associated with gardens, cattle, good food, art and patient cultivation; the full chart shapes how these themes are expressed.

The Moon in Rohini

People with the Moon in Rohini are usually charming and sensual, with a fine sense of beauty in people, objects and music. They create comfort and attract resources. The weak points are attachment to comfort and jealousy: what has grown is hard to let go. Jyotisha treats it as a strong Moon placement by sign; the full chart still matters.

The dasha sequence begins with the Moon (10 years): a childhood shaped strongly by the mother and the home.

Emotionally, Rohini needs beauty, comfort and stable affection; chaos and coldness drain it. It soothes itself with food, music and nature. What helps: a calm home, time in a garden or the countryside, and generosity that keeps attachment from turning into possessiveness. These are traditional tendencies, not a verdict; the full chart matters.

The four padas

Each pada is 3°20′ and falls in its own navamsha (D9) sign. The syllable is the traditional first sound of a name for a child born with the Moon in that pada.
PadaSpan (sidereal)Navamsha signName syllable
1Taurus 10°00′ – 13°20′Aries (Mesha)O
2Taurus 13°20′ – 16°40′Taurus (Vrishabha)Va
3Taurus 16°40′ – 20°00′Gemini (Mithuna)Vi
4Taurus 20°00′ – 23°20′Cancer (Karka)Vu

Pada 1 (Aries navamsha, syllable O) is energetic and enterprising: initiative inside a stable sign. Pada 2 (Taurus, Va) is vargottama — sign and navamsha are both Taurus; the most stable and sensual pada, with a talent for building wealth slowly. Pada 3 (Gemini, Vi) brings charm in words, trade and the art of conversation. Pada 4 (Cancer, Vu) is homely and family-centred, deeply caring.

All four padas lie in Taurus, ruled by Venus, while the nakshatra is ruled by the Moon: beauty and comfort joined with feeling.

Rohini in the classical texts

The Taittiriya Brahmana gives Rohini to Prajapati, the lord of creatures, and later authors read its gift (shakti) as the power to make things grow. Brihat Samhita (chapter 98) counts Rohini among the four fixed (dhruva, sthira) nakshatras, with the three Uttaras: the classical choice for anything that should last, from a wedding to the foundation of a house. In Vimshottari it belongs to the Moon, so a Rohini Moon begins life in a ten-year Moon period.

Rohini's star is Aldebaran, the red eye of the Bull. Rohini is traditionally identified with Aldebaran in Jyotisha star lists.

Rohini in relationships

In love, Rohini is romantic, tender and attached. It creates beauty around a partner and expects the same in return: attention, gifts, fidelity. Jealousy and possessiveness are frequent themes, especially if the Moon is afflicted. A steady, reliable partner brings out Rohini's best — generosity and warmth.

For matching, Rohini is manushya gana, serpent yoni and Antya nadi. Its yoni twin is Mrigashira; the serpent's classical enemy is the mongoose (Uttara Ashadha). Two Antya nadi charts lose the nadi points. The pages of other nakshatras show their scores against Rohini, and the compatibility calculator gives any pair.

Work and strengths

Strengths: taste, patience, the ability to grow things and attract resources. Good fields: farming and gardening, food and restaurants, fashion and cosmetics, art and music, real estate, banking and hospitality. Rohini may have an eye for presenting attractive products.

The Moon gives a feel for what people want; Venus, the sign lord, gives style. Rohini may suit work that develops over time; constant disorder can be tiring. It may favour saving; generosity can help balance the wish to accumulate.

What Rohini is good for

Rohini is fixed (dhruva), a class traditionally used for lasting undertakings such as foundations and long-term projects. Some muhurta traditions also consider it for weddings, planting and business openings. The final choice depends on the full panchanga and charts.

The ascendant and planets in Rohini

An ascendant in Rohini gives a pleasant, harmonious appearance and a calm voice. The Moon here is in Taurus, its sign of exaltation (the deepest point, 3°, lies in Krittika), and in its own nakshatra; Rohini's padas carry that grace. Venus in Rohini, in its own sign, refines taste for art, food and comfort. Jupiter here brings growth of resources but asks for moderation. Saturn in Rohini works slowly and patiently for lasting gains.

When the Moon's dasha runs, Rohini themes of home, family, land and abundance usually move to the front.

Remedies and practice

Rohini's practice is generosity with what grows. Tradition suggests honouring Prajapati or Brahma with a name mantra such as “Om Prajapataye namah”, planting and caring for trees, feeding cows and sharing food from one's own kitchen. For the ruling graha, the Moon, the classical mantra is on our mantras page; Mondays and the days of the Moon's passage through Rohini are natural times for it. Rohini's shadow, attachment, softens through giving things away. A gemstone is a classical upaya too: the tradition chooses it from the whole chart (functional benefics, the running dasha), with mantra and charity as the foundation; practices are optional and do not guarantee outcomes. For context, see remedies (upayas).

Rohini: compatibility with every nakshatra

Ashtakuta (36 gunas) for the Moon nakshatras of the couple, out of 36. A range means the score depends on the pada; 18 and above is the classical minimum for marriage. A real match also weighs Mangal dosha and both full charts.

Questions

Why is the Moon considered strong in Rohini?
Rohini lies in Taurus, the Moon’s sign of exaltation, and is the Moon’s own nakshatra in the Vimshottari scheme. This is a traditional sign-based assessment, not a complete reading of a chart.
What is Rohini's yoni?
The serpent (male). The other serpent nakshatra is Mrigashira. Gana Manushya, nadi Antya.
Is Rohini good for a wedding?
Yes, it is one of the classical wedding nakshatras — but a muhurat is chosen from all five limbs of the panchang and from both charts.
What does Rohini’s fixed (dhruva) class mean in muhurta?
Brihat Samhita chapter 98 places Rohini among the fixed nakshatras, traditionally chosen for lasting undertakings. A complete muhurta considers the whole panchanga and chart.
What is Rohini's shakti?
The power to make things grow, linked with its deity Prajapati.
