The nature of Bharani

Bharani's symbol is the womb — what carries and brings to birth. Its deity, Yama, was the first mortal and became the judge of the dead. Together they describe the full cycle of life: conception, burden, completion. Bharani teaches you to carry what you took on all the way to the end.

The Taittiriya Brahmana gives Bharani to Yama, the first mortal, who found the path to the world of the ancestors and became the lord of dharma and death. Later authors read its gift (shakti) as the power to carry away, to take what has finished its time. Brihat Samhita (chapter 98) counts Bharani among the fierce (ugra) nakshatras together with the Purvas and Magha: suited to decisive and difficult acts, not to soft beginnings. In the Vimshottari scheme Bharani belongs to Venus, so a Bharani Moon begins life in a twenty-year Venus period.
