The nature of Krittika

Krittika is the Pleiades, the nurses of the war god Skanda. Its symbol is a razor or a tongue of flame: what cuts away the unnecessary. In Vedic ritual Agni carries offerings to the gods, so Krittika is linked to purification, cooking, the crafts of fire and to honest, sometimes cutting speech.

Its first pada lies in Aries (fire), the other three in Taurus (earth). The first is more combative; the rest turn the fire towards building and nurturing.

The Moon in Krittika

People with the Moon in Krittika are direct, principled and demanding — of themselves first. They spot mistakes and say so, which makes them valued as experts and critics, if not always loved as company. Underneath there is often a great deal of care: Krittika feeds, protects and keeps discipline. In padas 2–4 the Moon is in Taurus, its sign of exaltation, and emotional stability is higher.

The dasha sequence begins with the Sun (6 years): short and bright, often with a strong influence from the father.

Emotionally, Krittika needs truth and respect; flattery and vagueness unsettle it. It can be hard on itself first of all. What helps: clear agreements, a craft or task where its precision is valued, and learning to soften the words while keeping the honesty. These are traditional tendencies, not a verdict; the full chart matters.

The four padas

Each pada is 3°20′ and falls in its own navamsha (D9) sign. The syllable is the traditional first sound of a name for a child born with the Moon in that pada.
PadaSpan (sidereal)Navamsha signName syllable
1Aries 26°40′ – 30°00′Sagittarius (Dhanu)A
2Taurus 0°00′ – 3°20′Capricorn (Makara)I
3Taurus 3°20′ – 6°40′Aquarius (Kumbha)U
4Taurus 6°40′ – 10°00′Pisces (Mina)E

Pada 1 (Sagittarius navamsha, syllable A) lies in Aries: a fiery teacher or fighter for principles, generous and outspoken. Pada 2 (Capricorn, I) is the first in Taurus: practical, disciplined, ambitious for status. Pada 3 (Aquarius, U) is independent and humanitarian, often working for a group or a cause. Pada 4 (Pisces, E) is the gentlest: the fire softens into devotion, care and art.

The Moon in the Taurus padas is in its sign of exaltation, with its deepest point at 3° Taurus inside this nakshatra; that gives emotional stability under the sharp surface.

Krittika in the classical texts

The Taittiriya Brahmana opens its list of nakshatras with Krittika and gives it to Agni, the fire that carries offerings to the gods; some early Vedic calendars began their nakshatra list with Krittika, unlike the common 27-nakshatra Jyotisha order that starts with Ashwini. Later authors read its gift (shakti) as the power to burn and purify. Brihat Samhita (chapter 98) counts Krittika with Vishakha among the mixed (mishra, sadharana) nakshatras: good for work with fire, metals and ordinary business. In Vimshottari it belongs to the Sun, so a Krittika Moon begins life in a six-year Sun period.

In the Puranas the six Krittikas nursed Skanda, the young war god, which links this nakshatra both with sharpness and with fierce, protective care.

Krittika in relationships

In relationships Krittika is protective, honest and demanding: it wants truth even when it hurts and can cut with a word. Behind that is great loyalty — the image of the six mothers who raised Skanda. Partners who value directness and keep their promises get a devoted, fierce ally.

For matching, Krittika is rakshasa gana, sheep yoni and Antya nadi. Its yoni twin is Pushya; the sheep's classical enemy is the monkey (Purva Ashadha, Shravana). Rakshasa gana with deva gana is traditionally a hard combination, and two Antya nadi charts lose the nadi points. The compatibility calculator gives the full score.

Work and strengths

Strengths: decisiveness, high standards, courage and the ability to purify — to cut away what does not work. Good fields: cooking and catering, metallurgy and engineering, surgery, the military and police, editing and criticism, teaching and management.

The Sun as ruler brings authority and visibility; Krittika likes to lead and to be right. Learning to correct without wounding and to praise as readily as it criticises makes it a respected boss rather than a feared one.

What Krittika is good for

Krittika is a “mixed” (mishra) nakshatra: good for work with fire and metal, cooking, routine business and decisive steps. It is rarely chosen for weddings.

The ascendant and planets in Krittika

An ascendant in Krittika gives a clear, sometimes sharp face and a person who speaks plainly. The Sun in Krittika's first pada is in Aries, its exaltation sign: authority and courage; in the Taurus padas it turns to building and providing. The Moon in Krittika's Taurus padas is in its sign of exaltation, though the cutting edge of the nakshatra remains. Mars here brings energy for crafts, cooking and engineering.

During the Sun's dasha Krittika themes of leadership, purification and standing by the truth come forward.

Remedies and practice

Krittika's practice is fire used well. Tradition suggests a lamp lit at sunrise or dusk, a name mantra to Agni such as “Om Agnaye namah”, and offering water to the rising Sun. For the ruling graha, the Sun, the classical mantra is on our mantras page. Feeding people, especially cooked food, and speaking truth without cruelty are counted as Krittika's own remedies. When the Moon passes through Krittika, it is a good day for cleaning, cooking for others and decisive steps. A gemstone is a classical upaya too: the tradition chooses it from the whole chart (functional benefics, the running dasha), with mantra and charity as the foundation; practices are optional and do not guarantee outcomes. For context, see remedies (upayas).

Krittika: compatibility with every nakshatra

Ashtakuta (36 gunas) for the Moon nakshatras of the couple, out of 36. A range means the score depends on the pada; 18 and above is the classical minimum for marriage. A real match also weighs Mangal dosha and both full charts.
