Uttara Ashadha nakshatra
Uttara Ashadha is the 21st nakshatra: from 26°40′ Sagittarius to 10° Capricorn. It is ruled by the Sun and its deities are the Vishvedevas, all the gods together. “The later invincible one”: a nakshatra of honest, lasting victory.

The nature of Uttara Ashadha
If Purva Ashadha starts the fight, Uttara Ashadha ends it with a victory no one can contest. The Vishvedevas are the ten universal gods, guardians of the virtues. This is the nakshatra of integrity, responsibility, duty and patient work for the common good. The Sun makes it oriented towards leadership.
At the junction of Uttara Ashadha and Shravana lies Abhijit, the “28th” nakshatra used in muhurat.
The Moon in Uttara Ashadha
People with the Moon in Uttara Ashadha are principled, dependable and tenacious. They dislike shortcuts and get what they want honestly, if slowly. They are respected as leaders and judges. The weak spot is rigidity and an inability to rest. The padas in Capricorn are especially practical and patient.
The dasha sequence begins with the Sun (6 years).
Emotionally, Uttara Ashadha needs integrity and purpose; it feels best when doing the right thing. It may seem reserved. What helps: long-term goals, trusted relationships, and recognising its own achievements. These are traditional tendencies, not a verdict; the full chart matters.
The four padas
| Pada | Span (sidereal) | Navamsha sign | Name syllable |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Sagittarius 26°40′ – 30°00′ | Sagittarius (Dhanu) | Bhe |
| 2 | Capricorn 0°00′ – 3°20′ | Capricorn (Makara) | Bho |
| 3 | Capricorn 3°20′ – 6°40′ | Aquarius (Kumbha) | Ja |
| 4 | Capricorn 6°40′ – 10°00′ | Pisces (Mina) | Ji |
Pada 1 (Aries navamsha, syllable Bhe) lies in Sagittarius and is traditionally associated with principled initiative. Pada 2 (Capricorn, Bho) is vargottama: both sign and navamsha are Capricorn, and this pada is associated with discipline and sustained effort. Pada 3 (Aquarius, Ja) is linked with group-minded ideas. Pada 4 (Pisces, Ji) is linked with compassion and devotion. The Sun rules the nakshatra; Jupiter rules the Sagittarius pada, Saturn the Capricorn padas. These are traditional tendencies, not fixed outcomes.
Uttara Ashadha in the classical texts
The Taittiriya Brahmana gives Uttara Ashadha to the Vishvedevas, all the gods together. Later authors read its gift (shakti) as the power to grant an unchallengeable victory. Brihat Samhita (chapter 98) counts the three Uttaras with Rohini among the fixed (dhruva) nakshatras: weddings, foundations and lasting undertakings. In Vimshottari it belongs to the Sun, so an Uttara Ashadha Moon begins life in a six-year Sun period.
Its last quarter and the start of Shravana hold Abhijit, the 28th nakshatra of the old lists, still used in muhurta; Abhijit muhurta at midday takes its name from it.
Uttara Ashadha in relationships
In relationships Uttara Ashadha is loyal, serious and responsible; it commits for the long term and keeps its word. It can seem reserved. Partners who value stability and honesty get a dependable companion.
For matching, Uttara Ashadha is manushya gana, mongoose yoni and Antya nadi. It is the only mongoose nakshatra; the serpent (Rohini, Mrigashira) is the mongoose's classical enemy. Two Antya nadi charts lose the nadi points. The compatibility calculator gives any pair.
Work and strengths
Strengths: integrity, responsibility, leadership and patience. Good fields: government and administration, law and judiciary, management, education, the military, engineering, any long-term institution.
The Sun gives leadership; Jupiter and Saturn give principle and endurance. Uttara Ashadha does best where results are earned slowly and fairly; it should allow itself rest and recognition.
What Uttara Ashadha is good for
Uttara Ashadha is a “fixed” (dhruva) nakshatra: for weddings, laying foundations, taking office, long projects and contracts.
The ascendant and planets in Uttara Ashadha
An ascendant in Uttara Ashadha gives an upright, serious bearing. The Sun in its first pada, in Sagittarius, makes a principled leader; in the Capricorn padas it turns to duty and institutions. Mars in the Capricorn padas is exalted in sign and works with discipline. Jupiter is debilitated in Capricorn; its deepest debilitation, 5° Capricorn, falls in Uttara Ashadha. Saturn there, in its own sign, builds slowly and well.
During the Sun's dasha Uttara Ashadha themes of responsibility, ethics and public service come forward.
Remedies and practice
Uttara Ashadha's practice is integrity. Tradition suggests honouring the Vishvedevas and the Sun: water offered at sunrise, a name mantra such as “Om Vishvebhyo devebhyo namah”, and keeping one's duties without cutting corners. For the ruling graha, the Sun, the classical mantra is on our mantras page. Work for a common good, from a community to an institution, is Uttara Ashadha's own remedy. The days of the Moon's passage through Uttara Ashadha suit weddings, contracts and long projects. A gemstone is a classical upaya too: the tradition chooses it from the whole chart (functional benefics, the running dasha), with mantra and charity as the foundation; practices are optional and do not guarantee outcomes. For context, see remedies (upayas).
