The nature of Uttara Phalguni

If Purva Phalguni is rest on the bed, Uttara is the agreement that makes the union last. Aryaman guards friendship, hospitality and marriage vows. Its symbol is the back legs of the bed, which hold everything up. It is the nakshatra of reliability, keeping one's word and helping those nearby.

Jyotisha gives Uttara Phalguni to Aryaman, the Aditya of hospitality, friendship and the marriage contract (the older Taittiriya list pairs him with Purva Phalguni). Later authors read its gift (shakti) as the power to accumulate prosperity through union. Brihat Samhita (chapter 98) counts the three Uttaras with Rohini among the fixed (dhruva) nakshatras, the classical choice for weddings, foundations and anything permanent. In Vimshottari it belongs to the Sun, so an Uttara Phalguni Moon begins life in a six-year Sun period.

In the Vedic wedding rites Aryaman is invoked as the friend who joins bride and groom, which is why this nakshatra stands so high in marriage muhurta.
