Muhurat
Muhurat for starting study (vidyarambha)
Learning is begun under light, soft and moving stars, on the day of Mercury — the intellect — or Jupiter — the teacher. The same rules serve an important exam.
The rules JyotiSoft checks for this event
| Nakshatras the event wants | Ashwini, Mrigashira, Punarvasu, Pushya, Hasta, Chitra, Swati, Anuradha, Shravana, Dhanishta, Shatabhisha, Revati |
|---|---|
| Nakshatras it refuses | Bharani, Krittika, Ashlesha, Magha, Jyeshtha, Mula |
| Favourable weekdays | Wednesday, Thursday |
| Unfavourable weekdays | Tuesday, Saturday |
| Checked for every event | Vishti (Bhadra) karana counts against the day; the tithis Chaturthi, Navami, Chaturdashi and Amavasya count against it, Dwitiya, Panchami, Dashami, Ekadashi, Dwadashi and Trayodashi for it; the day's yoga adds or subtracts a point. |

Nakshatras
Muhurta Chintamani's vidyarambha chapter favours the stars that carry learning: the light Ashwini, Pushya and Hasta; the soft Mrigashira, Chitra, Anuradha and Revati; the moving Punarvasu, Swati, Shravana, Dhanishta and Shatabhisha. Shravana, the star of listening, and Hasta, of skill, are especially loved by students. The fierce and sharp stars — Bharani, Krittika, Ashlesha, Magha, Mula and Jyeshtha — are refused.
Weekdays
Wednesday belongs to Mercury, the planet of the mind and speech; Thursday to Jupiter, the guru. Tuesday and Saturday count against the day: Mars brings haste and quarrels, Saturn delay. They are not banned outright.
Tithi
The general rules apply: the rikta tithis (4th, 9th, 14th) and Amavasya count against the day; Dwitiya, Panchami, Dashami, Ekadashi, Dwadashi and Trayodashi count for it. Traditionally Vasant Panchami, the day of Saraswati, is the favourite day to begin.
What to begin on such a day
The first lesson of a child, a new language, a course, a degree, the first class with a teacher. For an exam the date is usually fixed by others; then choose a good day for the final review and avoid Rahu kalam if you can choose the hour.
