Griha Pravesha — moving into a new home

Entering a new home has its own calendar: only six lunar months, never on a Sunday or Tuesday, under a fixed or soft nakshatra, and outside Chaturmas and the other bans.

Lunar months

Muhurta Chintamani names Magha, Phalguna, Vaishakha and Jyeshtha for entering a home; Kartika and Margashirsha are also widely allowed, and JyotiSoft accepts all six. In the other months the house is not entered ceremonially, however good the day. The months are lunar: they move against the civil calendar from year to year.

Nakshatras of the house

A home is meant to stand, so the fixed (dhruva) nakshatras lead: Rohini and the three Uttaras. With them come the soft ones — Mrigashira, Chitra, Anuradha, Revati — and the moving ones that bring life into the house: Swati, Dhanishta, Shatabhisha. The fierce and sharp stars are refused: Bharani, Krittika, Ashlesha, Magha, Jyeshtha and Mula.

Weekdays and periods

Sunday and Tuesday — the days of the Sun and Mars, both fiery — are ruled out completely. Saturday is allowed. On top of that, the house is not entered during Chaturmas, Pitru Paksha, Kharmas, an intercalary month or while Venus or Jupiter is combust.

What the moving day is

Griha Pravesha is the ceremonial first entry, not the day the furniture arrives. Many families carry in a pot of water or milk, light a lamp and boil milk in the new kitchen at the chosen hour, and move the rest on other days.

Questions

Does this apply to a rented flat?
The tradition is about one's own home, but many follow the same rules for a rented one: the first entry is still the beginning of life in that place.
Why is Sunday banned when it is a day off?
In muhurat Sunday belongs to the Sun, a fiery planet; Muhurta Chintamani rules it out for entering a home together with Tuesday, the day of Mars.
What if the move cannot wait for a good month?
Move the things, and do the ceremonial first entry later on a favourable day — the family can live in the house from that moment.
