Muhurat

Muhurat for buying a car

A vehicle is meant to move, so it wants moving and light nakshatras, and it is never bought on a Tuesday or Saturday — the days of Mars and Saturn.

Nakshatras

Twelve stars suit a vehicle: the chara (moving) Punarvasu, Swati, Shravana, Dhanishta and Shatabhisha; the laghu (light, quick) Ashwini, Pushya and Hasta; and the soft Mrigashira, Chitra, Anuradha and Revati. Ashwini, ruled by the divine horsemen, is the classical star of transport. Eleven are refused — the fierce Bharani, Magha and the three Purvas, the sharp Ardra, Ashlesha, Jyeshtha and Mula, and the mixed Krittika and Vishakha.

Weekdays

Tuesday (Mars — accidents, fire, metal) and Saturday (Saturn — breakdowns and delays) are ruled out entirely. Wednesday and Thursday are the best; other days are neutral.

Periods

As for any large purchase: not in Pitru Paksha, Kharmas, an intercalary month, or while Venus — the significator of vehicles and comfort — or Jupiter is combust.

Which moment counts

The payment and the handover of the keys. If the car is delivered on another day, the purchase muhurat is the day you pay and become the owner; the first drive can have its own good day, avoiding Rahu kalam.

Questions

Does this apply to a motorbike or a bicycle?
Yes, the tradition speaks of any vehicle (vahana). The same nakshatras and weekdays apply.
Why is Tuesday banned?
Tuesday belongs to Mars, the planet of accidents, cuts and fire; Indian almanacs give no vehicle purchase dates on Tuesdays or Saturdays.
Is a used car different?
No: the muhurat is about the moment the vehicle becomes yours, whatever its age.
