The event's nakshatra may rule any part of the Vedic day, from sunrise to the next sunrise, so a suitable muhurat can fall in the evening or at night.

Which nakshatras suit a wedding

Muhurta Chintamani lists eleven marriage nakshatras. Most are dhruva (fixed) — Rohini and the three Uttaras — or mridu (soft) — Mrigashira, Anuradha, Revati: a marriage is meant to be lasting and tender. Magha, Mula, Hasta and Swati complete the list. Bharani, Krittika and Ashlesha are refused: they are fierce or binding stars. The nakshatra may rule any part of the Vedic day, so many wedding muhurats fall in the evening or at night.

Weekdays

Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday — the days of the Moon, Mercury, Jupiter and Venus — are favoured. Tuesday and Saturday, the days of Mars and Saturn, lower the score but do not close the day completely.

Periods when weddings are not held

The strongest rules are about periods. Chaturmas — the four months from Devashayani to Prabodhini Ekadashi — is closed to weddings. So are Pitru Paksha, the fortnight of the ancestors; Kharmas, when the Sun is in Sagittarius or Pisces; an intercalary month; and the days when Venus or Jupiter is combust (hidden in the Sun's rays). Venus is the significator of marriage and Jupiter of blessing: when they are invisible, the union lacks support.

Day and hour
