Muhurat

Muhurat for travel (yatra)

For a journey Muhurta Chintamani divides the 27 stars into three groups: best, middling and forbidden. A forbidden star that rules any part of the daylight spoils the day.

The rules JyotiSoft checks for this event

Best stars for a journeyAshwini, Mrigashira, Punarvasu, Pushya, Hasta, Anuradha, Shravana, Dhanishta, Revati
Middling starsRohini, Purva Phalguni, Uttara Phalguni, Jyeshtha, Mula, Purva Ashadha, Uttara Ashadha, Shatabhisha, Purva Bhadrapada, Uttara Bhadrapada
Forbidden starsBharani, Krittika, Ardra, Ashlesha, Magha, Chitra, Swati, Vishakha
Favourable weekdaysMonday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday
Checked for every eventVishti (Bhadra) karana counts against the day; the tithis Chaturthi, Navami, Chaturdashi and Amavasya count against it, Dwitiya, Panchami, Dashami, Ekadashi, Dwadashi and Trayodashi for it; the day's yoga adds or subtracts a point.

The yatra table

Nine stars are best for setting out: Ashwini, Mrigashira, Punarvasu, Pushya, Hasta, Anuradha, Shravana, Dhanishta and Revati — light, soft and moving stars. Eight are forbidden: Bharani, Krittika, Ardra, Ashlesha, Magha, Chitra, Swati and Vishakha. The rest are middling: one can travel, but without the support of the sky. JyotiSoft checks every nakshatra that rules during the daylight hours, not only the one at sunrise.

Weekdays

Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday favour a journey. No weekday is banned in the general calendar, but the direction of travel matters: each weekday has its disha shula, an unfavourable direction. The app takes it into account when you give the direction.

What counts as the start

The moment you leave home for the journey. If the departure falls on a poor day, the tradition allows a prasthana: a symbolic start on a good day, when a packed bag is carried out of the house and left with someone nearby.

Within the day

Set out outside Rahu kalam. For flights the departure time counts, not the time you leave for the airport.

Questions

Why is Chitra forbidden for travel when it is good elsewhere?
Each event has its own table. In the yatra chapter Chitra and Swati fall among the stars of setbacks on the road, although they suit a home or a vehicle.
What about a return trip?
The rules are for the departure. A return home is less strict, but Rahu kalam is still avoided.
Does a business trip use the same rules?
Yes, any journey uses the yatra table; the purpose of the trip does not change it.
