Gemini (Mithuna)	3	Courage returns to old goals: good for finishing efforts. Drive carefully on short trips.
Cancer (Karka)	2	Money and speech call for care: pause before reacting or making a lending decision.
Leo (Simha)	1	You may feel ready to revisit unfinished efforts; channel frustration through steady movement and calm conversation.

Sagittarius (Dhanu)	9	Beliefs, elders and travel plans may invite a second look. Keep conversations respectful.
Capricorn (Makara)	8	Take care with physical risks, planned procedures and shared finances. Keep safety routines in view and discuss medical decisions with your clinician.
Aquarius (Kumbha)	7	Partnerships may call for extra patience. Listen first and give important decisions time.
Pisces (Mina)	6	A traditionally favourable house for Mars: steady effort can help with competition, debts and routines. It does not guarantee a particular result.

What happens in the sky

Every two years or so Earth overtakes Mars, which is then at its closest and brightest, and for about eleven weeks the red planet seems to move backwards. Mars entered sidereal Leo on 12 November 2026. The loop begins in Purva Phalguni and ends in Ashlesha, a few degrees from the deepest point of Mars's debilitation at 28° Cancer.

What a retrograde Mars means

Mars rules effort, courage, property, siblings, sport, blood and surgery. In Parashara's shadbala, a retrograde planet receives full cheshta bala (strength of motion); retrograde does not simply mean weak. Some Jyotish readings use the period to review how Mars-like themes—effort, courage and conflict—are handled. In Cancer, you may choose to give patience at home extra attention. This is an interpretive lens, not a verdict.

Mars and Jupiter together in Cancer

From 9 March to 26 April 2027 Mars shares Cancer with retrograde-then-direct Jupiter, which is exalted there. Some popular Jyotish sources call this conjunction Guru–Mangala yoga. Its interpretation depends on the full chart and dasha; the conjunction alone does not promise a result. The table below shows the house Mars turns back in.

How to use the time

Good: repairs at home and on vehicles, physiotherapy and steady training, closing a legal or family dispute, finishing building work already begun. More careful: elective surgery, risky sport, buying property or a car in a hurry, and words said in anger. If a fight cannot wait, prepare it twice and keep it short.

Questions

When is Mars retrograde in 2027?

From 10 January to 1 April 2027 (sidereal, Lahiri); the stations shift by at most a day with your time zone.

Which signs does Mars cross while retrograde?

It turns back in Leo, re-enters Cancer on 9 March 2027, turns direct there on 1 April and returns to Leo on 26 April.

Is Mars weak in Cancer?

Classical texts give Cancer as Mars's sign of debilitation, deepest at 28°. Retrograde Mars there is read as energy that needs patience and direction, not as a bad omen.

Should I postpone surgery?

Talk with your clinician; do not delay medically necessary care because of an astrological transit. If the date is flexible, some families consult a muhurta practitioner, who considers the full muhurta and chart rather than one retrograde period.

When is the next Mars retrograde?

In February–May 2029, in Virgo.
