Jyotisha gives Purva Phalguni to Bhaga, the Aditya of good fortune and marital happiness (the Taittiriya lists name the two Phalguni deities the other way round). Later authors read its gift (shakti) as the power of procreation. Brihat Samhita (chapter 98) counts the three Purvas (Phalguni, Ashadha, Bhadrapada) with Bharani and Magha among the fierce (ugra) nakshatras, even though Purva Phalguni's mood is joyful. In Vimshottari it belongs to Venus, so a Purva Phalguni Moon begins life in a twenty-year Venus period.

The Phalgunis are a pair, “former” and “latter”, like two halves of a bed; texts often read them together: the joy of union and then the duty that keeps it.
