Libra ascendant (Tula lagna)

The planets for this ascendant

Roles follow Parashara's house-lordship rule (BPHS ch. 34) as the JyotiSoft engine applies it: lords of the trines (1, 5, 9) help, lords of the 6th, 8th and 12th strain, and a planet that rules both an angle (4, 7, 10) and a trine is the yogakaraka. Some schools also count the 3rd and 11th lords as difficult and the 2nd and 7th lords as marakas. What a planet actually does depends on its strength and placement too.

Meeting the world

Libra is the movable air sign. The texts describe its rising as graceful, sociable and fair-minded, with good manners and a love of art and partnership. People with this lagna often see both sides of a question, which makes them good mediators and sometimes slow deciders. They do their best work with others rather than alone.

Venus, the lagna lord

Venus rules the 1st and the 8th house here, so the person's charm and their capacity for transformation are linked. A strong Venus gives artistic talent, diplomacy and attractiveness; a weak one can turn the wish to please into dependence on others' approval. Venus's house shows where this person seeks harmony.

The yogakaraka and the difficult planets

Saturn rules the 4th (home, property) and the 5th (intelligence, children): the yogakaraka. A well-placed Saturn gives a Libra life solid foundations and long-term success. Mercury rules the 9th and 12th and is a functional benefic, a planet of learning and luck. Jupiter rules the 3rd and 6th and strains, despite its natural kindness. Mars rules the 2nd and 7th and is neutral in the engine's table, though many astrologers call it a maraka for this lagna. The Sun (11th) and Moon (10th) are neutral.

Career and partnership

The 10th house is Cancer, ruled by the Moon: careers that serve the public, care for people, or deal with homes, food and hospitality, as well as law and diplomacy through Libra itself. The 7th is Aries, ruled by Mars: the partner is often direct, energetic and decisive, everything Libra hesitates to be. The relationship works as a balance of initiative and tact.

Saturn first, then Venus. The lagna's nakshatra (Chitra, Swati or Vishakha) adds creativity, independence or ambition. A Saturn mahadasha is often a constructive period for Libra rising; a Jupiter period asks for care with commitments.
