Scorpio ascendant (Vrischika lagna)

The planets for this ascendant

Roles follow Parashara's house-lordship rule (BPHS ch. 34) as the JyotiSoft engine applies it: lords of the trines (1, 5, 9) help, lords of the 6th, 8th and 12th strain, and a planet that rules both an angle (4, 7, 10) and a trine is the yogakaraka. Some schools also count the 3rd and 11th lords as difficult and the 2nd and 7th lords as marakas. What a planet actually does depends on its strength and placement too.

Meeting the world

Scorpio is the fixed water sign. The texts describe its rising as determined, perceptive and secretive, with deep feelings and a penetrating gaze. People with this lagna rarely do things halfway. They trust slowly, are fiercely loyal once they do, and are drawn to what is hidden: research, psychology, medicine, the occult.

Mars, the lagna lord

A strong Mars, in its own signs or exalted in Capricorn, gives endurance, courage and the ability to recover from anything. Weak or afflicted, it can turn intensity into conflict. Because Mars also rules the 6th, health routines and the handling of rivals are part of this person's main story. Mars's house shows the battlefield of choice.

Friends and difficult planets

The Moon rules the 9th (fortune, father, faith) and is a functional benefic, although it is debilitated in Scorpio itself: emotional faith is something this lagna builds. Jupiter rules the 2nd and 5th and helps greatly: wisdom, money and children. Mercury rules the 8th and 11th and strains. Venus rules the 7th and 12th and strains too, so relationships and pleasures ask for maturity. The Sun (10th) and Saturn (3rd and 4th) are neutral.

Career and partnership

The 10th house is Leo, ruled by the Sun: careers with authority and visibility, in government, medicine, management or investigation. The 7th is Taurus, ruled by Venus: the partner is often calm, sensual and steady, a stabilising presence for Scorpio's storms. Trust and loyalty are the currency of this lagna's relationships.

Mars first, then Jupiter and the Moon. The lagna's nakshatra (Vishakha, Anuradha or Jyeshtha) adds ambition, devotion or seniority. Jupiter and Moon dashas usually support this ascendant; Mercury and Venus periods need care with commitments and money.
