Sagittarius ascendant (Dhanu lagna)

The planets for this ascendant

Roles follow Parashara's house-lordship rule (BPHS ch. 34) as the JyotiSoft engine applies it: lords of the trines (1, 5, 9) help, lords of the 6th, 8th and 12th strain, and a planet that rules both an angle (4, 7, 10) and a trine is the yogakaraka. Some schools also count the 3rd and 11th lords as difficult and the 2nd and 7th lords as marakas. What a planet actually does depends on its strength and placement too.

Meeting the world

Sagittarius is the dual fire sign. The texts describe its rising as frank, generous, optimistic and principled, often tall or athletic, with a love of open spaces and big ideas. People with this lagna believe in things and want to share them. The risk is preaching or over-promising; the gift is inspiration.

Jupiter, the lagna lord

A strong Jupiter, in its own signs or exalted in Cancer, gives wisdom, good fortune and the trust of others. A weak Jupiter, debilitated in Capricorn or afflicted, can make optimism careless. Jupiter's house shows where this person seeks meaning: in the 9th through teachers and faith, in the 10th through vocation, in the 5th through children and study.

Friends and difficult planets

The Sun rules the 9th house of fortune and is a functional benefic, often a source of support from father or mentors. Mars rules the 5th and 12th and helps as a trine lord. Venus rules the 6th and 11th and strains: gains come, but with competition or health demands. The Moon rules the 8th and is neutral in the engine's table, because the luminaries are not blemished by the 8th. Mercury (7th and 10th, two angles) and Saturn (2nd and 3rd) are neutral.

Career and partnership

The 10th house is Virgo, ruled by Mercury: careers in teaching, writing, law, consulting, publishing or travel-related work. The 7th is Gemini, also Mercury's: the partner is often witty, communicative and youthful. Mercury therefore governs both work and marriage for this lagna, and its condition is worth studying closely.

Reading your own chart

Jupiter first, then the Sun and Mars, then Mercury for career and partnership. The lagna's nakshatra (Mula, Purva Ashadha or Uttara Ashadha) adds research, conviction or steadfastness. Sun and Mars dashas are often favourable; a Venus period needs care with health and rivals.
