Cancer ascendant (Karka lagna)

The planets for this ascendant

Roles follow Parashara's house-lordship rule (BPHS ch. 34) as the JyotiSoft engine applies it: lords of the trines (1, 5, 9) help, lords of the 6th, 8th and 12th strain, and a planet that rules both an angle (4, 7, 10) and a trine is the yogakaraka. Some schools also count the 3rd and 11th lords as difficult and the 2nd and 7th lords as marakas. What a planet actually does depends on its strength and placement too.

Meeting the world

Cancer is the movable water sign. The texts describe its rising as caring, imaginative, attached to home and mother, with moods that change like the tides. People with this lagna sense atmosphere quickly and remember everything. They protect those they love and can be hurt easily themselves. A strong Moon makes them resilient; an afflicted one makes them anxious.

The Moon, the lagna lord

The Moon rules only the 1st house here, so its condition speaks almost directly of health, mood and direction. A bright, well-placed Moon (waxing, in its own sign or exalted in Taurus, in an angle) gives emotional strength and public appeal. A dark or afflicted Moon asks for more rest and stable routines. Its nakshatra at birth matters as much as the lagna itself.

The yogakaraka and the difficult planets

Mars rules the 5th (intelligence, children) and the 10th (career): the yogakaraka. Its periods often bring achievement through courage and initiative. Jupiter rules the 6th and 9th; as a trine lord it is a functional benefic, and exalted in Cancer itself. Saturn rules the 7th and 8th and strains, which makes partnership a field of lessons. Mercury rules the 3rd and 12th and also strains. The Sun (2nd) and Venus (4th and 11th) are neutral.

Career and partnership

The 10th house is Aries, ruled by Mars: careers that need initiative, protection or fast decisions, such as medicine, real estate, engineering, policing or one's own business. The 7th is Capricorn, ruled by Saturn: the partner is often serious, older in spirit, reliable, and the relationship matures slowly. For Cancer rising, marriage tends to improve with time.

Reading your own chart

Look at Mars (yogakaraka) and the Moon (lagna lord) together, and at the Moon's phase at birth. The lagna's nakshatra (Punarvasu, Pushya or Ashlesha) adds optimism, care or depth. Mars and Jupiter dashas are usually productive for this ascendant.
