Leo ascendant (Simha lagna)

The planets for this ascendant

Roles follow Parashara's house-lordship rule (BPHS ch. 34) as the JyotiSoft engine applies it: lords of the trines (1, 5, 9) help, lords of the 6th, 8th and 12th strain, and a planet that rules both an angle (4, 7, 10) and a trine is the yogakaraka. Some schools also count the 3rd and 11th lords as difficult and the 2nd and 7th lords as marakas. What a planet actually does depends on its strength and placement too.

Meeting the world

Leo is the fixed fire sign. Classical texts describe its rising as dignified, generous and proud, with a strong presence that others notice. People with this lagna take responsibility naturally and dislike being small. Their challenge is the shadow of the same gift: needing recognition, finding it hard to be corrected.

The Sun, the lagna lord

The Sun rules only the 1st house, so its strength speaks of vitality, confidence and reputation. Strong in Leo itself or exalted in Aries, it gives natural authority. Weak in Libra or hidden in a dusthana, it asks the person to build confidence from within. The Sun's house shows where this person wants to shine.

The yogakaraka and the difficult planets

Mars rules the 4th (home, property, inner peace) and the 9th (fortune, father, faith): the yogakaraka. Jupiter is mixed: it rules the 5th, a trine, but also the 8th. Saturn rules the 6th and 7th and strains, which is why relationships and health routines ask for discipline. The Moon rules the 12th and strains too, connecting this lagna with expenses, sleep and retreat. Mercury (2nd and 11th) and Venus (3rd and 10th) are neutral in the engine's table, and both matter for money and career.

Career and partnership

The 10th house is Taurus, ruled by Venus: careers in the arts, design, finance, luxury, hospitality or anything where taste and presentation count. The 7th is Aquarius, ruled by Saturn: the partner is often independent, principled and somewhat reserved, a counterweight to Leo's warmth. Relationships thrive when both keep their own space.

Reading your own chart

Check the Sun and Mars first, then Saturn as 7th lord. The lagna's nakshatra (Magha, Purva Phalguni or Uttara Phalguni) adds ancestry, pleasure or service to the Leo style. A Mars mahadasha often brings property, travel or a turn in fortune.
