Ascendants (lagna)

Pisces ascendant (Meena lagna)

A Pisces lagna is ruled by Jupiter, which owns both the 1st and the 10th house here: the person's path and their calling are one. It is a lagna of compassion, imagination and faith, and of a life that often follows a sense of purpose more than a plan.

Roles follow Parashara's house-lordship rule (BPHS ch. 34) as the JyotiSoft engine applies it: lords of the trines (1, 5, 9) help, lords of the 6th, 8th and 12th strain, and a planet that rules both an angle (4, 7, 10) and a trine is the yogakaraka. Some schools also count the 3rd and 11th lords as difficult and the 2nd and 7th lords as marakas. What a planet actually does depends on its strength and placement too.

Meeting the world

Pisces is the dual water sign, the last of the zodiac. The texts describe its rising as gentle, kind, intuitive and imaginative, with soft features and expressive eyes. People with this lagna feel others' moods and often help without being asked. Their challenge is boundaries; their gift is empathy.

Jupiter, the lagna lord

A strong Jupiter, in its own signs or exalted in Cancer, gives wisdom, protection and a respected vocation, often in teaching, healing or counsel. A weak Jupiter can make goodwill naive. Because Jupiter rules the 10th too, its condition tells as much about career as about character.

Friends and difficult planets

The Moon rules the 5th house of children and intelligence and is a functional benefic. Mars rules the 2nd and 9th and helps: money and fortune through courage. Saturn rules the 11th and 12th and strains, Venus rules the 3rd and 8th and strains, and the Sun rules the 6th and strains as well. Mercury, lord of the 4th and 7th, is neutral, though many astrologers watch it as the 7th lord.

Career and partnership

The 10th house is Sagittarius, Jupiter's own: careers in teaching, law, religion, medicine, counselling or charity. The 7th is Virgo, ruled by Mercury: the partner is often practical, precise and helpful, grounding Pisces' dreams. Mercury is debilitated in Pisces, so the art of clear communication is something this lagna learns in relationships.

Reading your own chart

Jupiter first, then the Moon and Mars. The lagna's nakshatra (Purva Bhadrapada, Uttara Bhadrapada or Revati) adds idealism, depth or gentleness. Jupiter, Moon and Mars dashas are usually supportive; Saturn and Venus periods ask for care with expenses and commitments.
