Purnima and Amavasya 2027: all dates and tithi times
2027 has 12 Purnimas (full-moon tithis) and 13 Amavasyas (new-moon tithis): two new moons fall in August, and the year opens and closes with a Pausha Amavasya. The table gives each tithi's start and end in Delhi time, computed from the angle between the Sun and the Moon. A tithi rarely matches a calendar day, so the day you keep depends on the rule your tradition follows.
In short
- 12 Purnimas and 13 Amavasyas in 2027; two Amavasyas in August (1–2 and 31 August).
- The Purnima tithi lasts while the Moon is 168° to 180° ahead of the Sun, the Amavasya tithi from 348° to 360°.
- Times are for Delhi (IST). Elsewhere a tithi begins and ends at the same instant, only the clock reading differs.
- An Amavasya is named here as in North Indian (purnimanta) calendars; amanta calendars count it as the last day of the previous month.

Local time in Delhi; sidereal (Lahiri) positions, the tithi from the true Sun and Moon. A month is named after the Sun's sign at the new moon that opens it.
What a tithi is
A tithi is a lunar day: the time the Moon takes to gain 12° on the Sun. There are 30 in a lunar month, so a tithi lasts from about 19 to 26 hours and starts at any hour, not at sunrise. Purnima is the 15th tithi of the bright half, Amavasya the 30th, the last of the dark half.
Which day is kept
Calendars choose the day of a Purnima or Amavasya observance by different rules: the tithi present at sunrise, at moonrise, or in the evening. When a tithi starts after one sunrise and ends before the next, two neighbouring dates can both have a claim, and printed calendars then differ by a day. Check the start and end times in the table against the rule of your tradition, or open the app for your own city.
Month names
The month is named after the Sun's sign at the new moon that opens it (Sun in Pisces: Chaitra). A Purnima has the same name in both Indian systems. An Amavasya is named here as in North Indian purnimanta calendars, which begin the month after the full moon: there the January Amavasya is in Pausha, while amanta calendars count it as the last day of Margashirsha. No adhika (extra) month falls in 2027.
