Capricorn ascendant (Makara lagna)

The planets for this ascendant

Roles follow Parashara's house-lordship rule (BPHS ch. 34) as the JyotiSoft engine applies it: lords of the trines (1, 5, 9) help, lords of the 6th, 8th and 12th strain, and a planet that rules both an angle (4, 7, 10) and a trine is the yogakaraka. Some schools also count the 3rd and 11th lords as difficult and the 2nd and 7th lords as marakas. What a planet actually does depends on its strength and placement too.

Meeting the world

Capricorn is the movable earth sign. The texts describe its rising as practical, ambitious, reserved and hard-working, often maturing slowly and looking better with age. People with this lagna take responsibility early. Their challenge is to allow themselves joy; their gift is reliability.

Saturn, the lagna lord

Saturn rules the 1st and 2nd house here: the person and their resources. A strong Saturn, in its own signs or exalted in Libra, gives patience, organisation and lasting achievement. A weak one can bring pessimism or an overload of duty. Saturn's house shows where this person builds, and its dasha is usually a defining period.

The yogakaraka and the difficult planets

Venus rules the 5th (creativity, children, intelligence) and the 10th (career): the yogakaraka. Its periods often bring success, comfort and recognition. Mercury rules the 6th and 9th and, as a trine lord, helps. Jupiter rules the 3rd and 12th and strains, and is debilitated in Capricorn as well. The Sun rules the 8th but is not blemished by it in the engine's table, so it is neutral. The Moon (7th) and Mars (4th and 11th) are neutral too.

Career and partnership

The 10th house is Libra, ruled by Venus: careers in law, finance, design, the arts, diplomacy or management of people. The 7th is Cancer, ruled by the Moon: the partner is often caring, emotional and home-loving, bringing warmth to Capricorn's discipline. Family life tends to steady this lagna.

Venus first, then Saturn. The lagna's nakshatra (Uttara Ashadha, Shravana or Dhanishta) adds steadfastness, listening or rhythm. Venus and Mercury dashas usually open doors for this ascendant; Jupiter periods ask for care with spending.
