Purva Ashadha nakshatra
Purva Ashadha is the 20th nakshatra: Sagittarius from 13°20′ to 26°40′. It is ruled by Venus and its deity is Apas, the waters. “The early invincible one”: a nakshatra of inspiration, conviction and purification.

The nature of Purva Ashadha
Its symbol is a fan that refreshes and cleanses. Apas are the cosmic waters that wash away impurity. This nakshatra inspires and persuades, believes in its cause and does not give up. Venus adds charm, taste and a love of beauty. Its shakti is the power “to invigorate”.
The Moon in Purva Ashadha
People with the Moon in Purva Ashadha are usually confident, independent and full of enthusiasm. They make good speakers, teachers and advertisers. In arguments they hold out to the end and rarely admit defeat. The task is to hear the other side's truth and not overdo the self-assurance.
The dasha sequence begins with Venus (20 years).
Emotionally, Purva Ashadha needs to believe in something and be heard; it is proud and resilient. Defeat stings. What helps: a cause worth working for, physical renewal through water and nature, and listening to other views. These are traditional tendencies, not a verdict; the full chart matters.
The four padas
| Pada | Span (sidereal) | Navamsha sign | Name syllable |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Sagittarius 13°20′ – 16°40′ | Leo (Simha) | Bhu |
| 2 | Sagittarius 16°40′ – 20°00′ | Virgo (Kanya) | Dha |
| 3 | Sagittarius 20°00′ – 23°20′ | Libra (Tula) | Pha |
| 4 | Sagittarius 23°20′ – 26°40′ | Scorpio (Vrishchika) | Dha |
Pada 1 (Sagittarius navamsha, syllable Bhu) is vargottama: both sign and navamsha are Sagittarius. Pada 2 (Capricorn, Dha) is practical and attentive to detail. Pada 3 (Aquarius, Pha) is artistic and diplomatic. Pada 4 (Pisces, Dha) is reflective and determined. All four padas lie in Sagittarius, Jupiter’s sign; Venus rules the nakshatra. These are traditional tendencies, not fixed outcomes.
Purva Ashadha in the classical texts
The Taittiriya Brahmana gives Purva Ashadha to Apas, the waters. Later authors read its gift (shakti) as the power to invigorate. Brihat Samhita (chapter 98) counts the three Purvas with Bharani and Magha among the fierce (ugra) nakshatras. In Vimshottari it belongs to Venus, so a Purva Ashadha Moon begins life in a twenty-year Venus period.
Ashadha means “invincible”, and the two Ashadhas form a pair: Purva begins the struggle with conviction, Uttara finishes it. The month Ashadha, the start of the monsoon, is named after this pair.
Purva Ashadha in relationships
In relationships Purva Ashadha is warm, persuasive and proud; it wants admiration and a partner who shares its causes. It can be stubborn in arguments. Partners who are honest and willing to debate kindly suit it best.
For matching, Purva Ashadha is manushya gana, monkey yoni and Madhya nadi. Its yoni twin is Shravana; the sheep (Krittika, Pushya) is the monkey's classical enemy. Two Madhya nadi charts lose the nadi points. The compatibility calculator gives any pair.
Work and strengths
Strengths: persuasion, enthusiasm, resilience and a sense of mission. Good fields: law and advocacy, public speaking and media, marketing, teaching, shipping and water industries, the arts, politics.
Venus gives charm; Jupiter, the sign lord, gives conviction. Purva Ashadha does best leading a cause; it should check facts before it argues and listen before it persuades.
What Purva Ashadha is good for
Formally a “fierce” (ugra) nakshatra: it is used for decisive steps, disputes and work connected with the sea and water, but not for weddings.
The ascendant and planets in Purva Ashadha
An ascendant in Purva Ashadha gives a persuasive, confident presence. Venus here, in its own nakshatra, brings charm, oratory and artistic flair. Jupiter in Purva Ashadha is in Sagittarius, its own sign: conviction and teaching. The Moon here is enthusiastic and proud of its ideals. Mars gives fighting spirit for a cause. Mercury here speaks well but should check facts before arguing.
During Venus's dasha Purva Ashadha themes of persuasion, art and public life come forward.
Remedies and practice
Purva Ashadha's practice is purifying conviction. Tradition suggests honouring the waters: a name mantra such as “Om Adbhyo namah”, keeping rivers and wells clean, and giving water to the thirsty. For the ruling graha, Venus, the classical mantra is on our mantras page; Fridays are traditional for it. Listening before persuading is its own remedy. The days of the Moon's passage through Purva Ashadha suit decisive steps and work connected with water. A gemstone is a classical upaya too: the tradition chooses it from the whole chart (functional benefics, the running dasha), with mantra and charity as the foundation; practices are optional and do not guarantee outcomes. For context, see remedies (upayas).
