The nature of Shatabhisha
Shatabhisha means “a hundred healers” or “a hundred stars”. Its symbol is an empty circle: a closed space, a boundary that hides a secret. Varuna is the god of the cosmic waters and of world order, who sees what is hidden. It is the nakshatra of medicine, science, technology, astronomy and solitary research. Rahu strengthens the interest in the unconventional.
The Moon in Shatabhisha
People with the Moon in Shatabhisha are independent, observant and often reserved. They need freedom and time alone. They make good researchers, doctors, programmers and analysts. The difficulty is loneliness and mistrust; it helps to have at least a few close people they can open up to.
The dasha sequence begins with Rahu (18 years).
Emotionally, Shatabhisha needs solitude to recharge and truth to trust; it can seem distant. What helps: time alone, a field of study to absorb itself in, and a few people who understand its need for space. These are traditional tendencies, not a verdict; the full chart matters.
The four padas
| Pada | Span (sidereal) | Navamsha sign | Name syllable |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Aquarius 6°40′ – 10°00′ | Sagittarius (Dhanu) | Go |
| 2 | Aquarius 10°00′ – 13°20′ | Capricorn (Makara) | Sa |
| 3 | Aquarius 13°20′ – 16°40′ | Aquarius (Kumbha) | Si |
| 4 | Aquarius 16°40′ – 20°00′ | Pisces (Mina) | Su |
Pada 1 (Sagittarius navamsha, syllable Go) is philosophical and idealistic. Pada 2 (Capricorn, Sa) is practical and ambitious. Pada 3 (Aquarius, Si) is vargottama: the most independent, scientific and unconventional. Pada 4 (Pisces, Su) is compassionate and intuitive, drawn to healing.
All four padas lie in Aquarius, Saturn's sign; Rahu rules the nakshatra and adds originality.
Shatabhisha in the classical texts
The Taittiriya Brahmana gives Shatabhisha (also Shatataraka) to Varuna, the lord of the waters and of cosmic order. Later authors read its gift (shakti) as the power of healing. Brihat Samhita (chapter 98) counts Shatabhisha among the movable (chara) nakshatras. In Vimshottari it belongs to Rahu, so a Shatabhisha Moon begins life in an eighteen-year Rahu period.
Varuna sees hidden truths and binds those who break their word; Shatabhisha keeps both sides: the healer of “a hundred remedies” and the keeper of secrets.
Shatabhisha in relationships
In relationships Shatabhisha is private, honest and loyal, but needs space and time alone. It opens slowly. Partners who respect its independence and share its interests see its depth.
For matching, Shatabhisha is rakshasa gana, horse yoni and Adi nadi. Its yoni twin is Ashwini; the buffalo (Hasta, Swati) is the horse's classical enemy. Two Adi nadi charts lose the nadi points. The compatibility calculator gives any pair.
Work and strengths
Strengths: research, healing, technical skill and independent thinking. Good fields: medicine and pharmacy, science and research, technology and IT, astronomy and astrology, alternative healing, engineering.
Rahu gives originality; Saturn, the sign lord, gives discipline. Shatabhisha works well alone or in small expert teams; it should share its findings rather than keep them secret.
What Shatabhisha is good for
Shatabhisha is a “movable” (chara) nakshatra: for treatment, starting research, travel and technical work.
The ascendant and planets in Shatabhisha
An ascendant in Shatabhisha gives a reserved, original nature. Saturn here, in Aquarius, its own sign, makes a researcher, engineer or reformer. Rahu in its own nakshatra is strong in technology, medicine and unconventional paths. The Moon in Shatabhisha needs solitude to recharge. Mercury here favours science and data. Jupiter here supports healing professions.
During Rahu's dasha Shatabhisha themes of research, healing and independence come forward.
Remedies and practice
Shatabhisha's practice is healing and truthfulness. Tradition suggests honouring Varuna with a name mantra such as “Om Varunaya namah”, offering water, and keeping promises carefully. For the ruling graha, Rahu, the classical mantra is on our mantras page. Supporting medical care for those who cannot afford it fits this nakshatra. Time alone is medicine here, but isolation is not; stay connected to a few people. The days of the Moon's passage through Shatabhisha suit treatment and research. A gemstone is a classical upaya too: the tradition chooses it from the whole chart (functional benefics, the running dasha), with mantra and charity as the foundation; practices are optional and do not guarantee outcomes. For context, see remedies (upayas).
