Nakshatras
Ardra nakshatra
Ardra is the sixth nakshatra: Gemini from 6°40′ to 20°. It is ruled by Rahu and its deity is Rudra, the storm god. “The moist one”: a nakshatra of tears, thunderstorms and the renewal that follows them.

The nature of Ardra
Ardra means “moist”. Its deity Rudra is the storm form of Shiva: he destroys, but after the storm the earth is soaked and turns green. Its symbol is a teardrop or a diamond, the stone born under pressure. Ardra is about the strength to go through a crisis and come out renewed.
Rahu gives it a sharp, investigative mind and an interest in technology and everything new — along with restlessness.
The Moon in Ardra
People with the Moon in Ardra are intellectual, honest to the point of bluntness, and feel more than they show. Shallow relationships do not satisfy them; they need depth. Life often takes them through turning points from which they emerge wiser and stronger. Good fields: science, programming, research, medicine, psychology.
The dasha sequence begins with Rahu (18 years), so the early years are often full of change.
Emotionally, Ardra feels intensely and needs to understand what it feels; suppressed emotion comes out as a storm. What helps: naming feelings early, a sport or demanding project to absorb energy, and people who stay calm when it is not. These are traditional tendencies, not a verdict; the full chart matters.
The four padas
| Pada | Span (sidereal) | Navamsha sign | Name syllable |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Gemini 6°40′ – 10°00′ | Sagittarius (Dhanu) | Ku |
| 2 | Gemini 10°00′ – 13°20′ | Capricorn (Makara) | Gha |
| 3 | Gemini 13°20′ – 16°40′ | Aquarius (Kumbha) | Nga |
| 4 | Gemini 16°40′ – 20°00′ | Pisces (Mina) | Chha |
Pada 1 (Sagittarius navamsha, syllable Ku) seeks meaning in the storm: philosophy, teaching, frank speech. Pada 2 (Capricorn, Gha) is ambitious and hard-working, good at systems and money. Pada 3 (Aquarius, Nga) is the most inventive: technology, science, social causes. Pada 4 (Pisces, Chha) is the most feeling: compassion, healing after loss, art.
All four padas lie in Gemini, ruled by Mercury, while Rahu rules the nakshatra: a sharp, questioning intellect in every pada.
Ardra in the classical texts
The Taittiriya Brahmana gives Ardra to Rudra, the roaring storm god of the Vedas, later worshipped as Shiva. Later authors read its gift (shakti) as effort, the strength to make an attempt. Brihat Samhita (chapter 98) counts Ardra among the sharp (tikshna) nakshatras, with Ashlesha, Jyeshtha and Mula: suited to forceful acts, separation and difficult work, not to weddings. In Vimshottari it belongs to Rahu, so an Ardra Moon begins life in an eighteen-year Rahu period.
Ardra's star is Betelgeuse in Orion. In South India the day of Ardra in the Tamil month of Margazhi is Thiruvathirai, the festival of Shiva as Nataraja, the cosmic dancer: the storm that also creates.
Ardra in relationships
In relationships Ardra feels deeply and sometimes stormily; honesty matters more to it than calm. After a quarrel it often clears the air and becomes closer. Partners who can talk through difficult things and give it room to think suit it best.
For matching, Ardra is manushya gana, dog yoni and Adi nadi. Its yoni twin is Mula; the dog's classical enemy is the deer (Anuradha, Jyeshtha). Two Adi nadi charts lose the nadi points. The compatibility calculator gives any pair.
Work and strengths
Strengths: analysis, persistence in hard problems, technical skill and the courage to face crises. Good fields: research and data, software and electronics, medicine (especially emergency and pharmacology), journalism, crisis management, psychology and social work.
Rahu brings ambition and unconventional paths; Mercury gives analysis. Ardra grows through challenges, but it needs rest after each storm; a steady routine keeps its talent from burning out.
What Ardra is good for
Ardra is a “sharp” (tikshna) nakshatra. It is chosen for ending unwanted ties, difficult research and tough tasks — not for weddings or gentle beginnings.
The ascendant and planets in Ardra
An ascendant in Ardra gives an intense look and a quick, analytical mind. Mercury here, in its own sign Gemini, excels in research, coding, writing and languages. Rahu in Ardra, in a sign where many authors call it strong, brings ambition in technology and science. The Moon in Ardra feels deeply and recovers through action. Jupiter in Ardra sets its wisdom to questions that disturb the comfortable.
During Rahu's dasha Ardra themes of upheaval, reinvention and technical mastery usually rise.
Remedies and practice
Ardra's practice turns the storm into effort. Tradition suggests honouring Rudra with the name mantra “Om Namah Shivaya”, water offered to a Shiva linga, and the Rudra hymns on Mondays. For the ruling graha, Rahu, the classical mantra is on our mantras page. Helping people in crisis, and channelling anger into hard work or study, are counted as Ardra's own remedies. On the days of the Moon's passage through Ardra, finish difficult tasks and avoid starting gentle things. A gemstone is a classical upaya too: the tradition chooses it from the whole chart (functional benefics, the running dasha), with mantra and charity as the foundation; practices are optional and do not guarantee outcomes. For context, see remedies (upayas).
